Nikolay Vasiliev invites to a bus tour along the Yauza River
This trip will be devoted to the history of Moscow architecture on one river. Obviously, the main Moscow avenue is the Moscow River. But what is hidden on the banks of the Yauza?
Oddly enough, the history of the architectural Yauza began long before the Petrine era, although, of course. It was Peter I who gave impetus to Moscow’s growth to the northeast, along the Yauza. Palaces of Lefortovo as the first version of the European capital of Russia. The Izmaylov fleet loomed behind them. Another palace stood between Semenovsk and Preobrazhensky. Where the first regiments of boy-soldiers were formed. Which later became a fundamentally new format of the Russian army. By the twentieth century. The pipes of plants and factories grew on the place of meadows and woods. And next to them were the luxurious mansions of their owners. Erected at times by the unique projects of the great masters of the “modernist style”.
The giant hydrosystem of Moscow, conceived in the 1930s. Was supposed to turn the Yauza into one of the passenger arteries leading to the city center. Its waters in the upper course would have merged with the canal that wrapped around Moscow through the southeast parks.
The construction of one of the most talented architects of the 1930s Georgy Goltz remained from these plans.
Within the framework of one excursion we will try to unite the main milestones of the five-hundred-year history of architecture. Limiting it on a territorial basis. And the banks of the Yauza River are very interesting in this sense!
