Kashin is also known as the largest balneotherapeutic and mud-cure resort in Russia. The town was a major religious hub in the middle of the XVI century. There were up to 30 churches and 10 monasteries.
Known since the XII century, a small old town Kalyazin is located in the place, where the river Zhabnya flows into the Volga. In 1940. When the Uglich reservoir was filled. The whole of its historical center went under water along with the ancient Troitsky monastery and St. Nicholas Cathedral.
The cathedral bell tower rising in the middle of the river is all that remains of the flooded part of the city. This, simultaneously bright and sad image of the Upper Volga, Alexander Solzhenitsyn called “a symbol of the floodability of Russia.”
