It was founded in 1152 by the duke Yury Dolgoruky – one of the younger sons of Vladimir Monomakh. In the XIII century Pereslavl was the capital of the apanage principality of the Vladimir-Suzdal land. An outstanding political figure and commander, the duke Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky, was born here around 1220. The history of the city is associated with the names of many grand dukes and tsars – Ivan III and his son Vasily III, Ivan IV the Terrible and Boris Godunov. CITY WITH RICH HISTORY. At the end of the XVII century the so-called “amusing flotilla,” which laid the foundation for the Russian navy. It was being built under the leadership of the young Tsar Peter I on the shores of Pleshcheev Lake. Nowadays, the only extant ship of the “amusing flotilla” – the Fortuna boat, is stored in the museum-estate “The overshoe of Peter I”, located 2 kilometers from the city, near the ancient village of Veskovo.
